White tea holds the distinction of being the tea variety with the longest history in China. Among the different types of white tea, Yunnan white tea stands out for its exquisite flavor and unique production process. During the Qing dynasty, Yunnan white tea was highly regarded and even served as a tribute tea to the royal family.

Nowadays, one of the most famous varieties of Yunnan white tea is Moonlight white tea. This delicate tea requires special care and attention during its production process. The tea buds are carefully released over the course of four nights, allowing them to unfurl slowly under the soft moonlight. The dried leaves of Moonlight white tea have a distinctive appearance, with one side being black and the other side a soft grayish white, resembling a crescent moon.

To maintain the quality and flavor of Yunnan white tea, strict traditions are followed during its cultivation and processing. The tea buds must be selected with care, ensuring only the most tender buds are used. The leaves are plucked and processed within a day, with no exposure to direct sunlight during this time. This meticulous process results in a tea that is highly prized for its fragrance, delicate flavor and subtle sweetness.

The allure of moonlight has long captivated the human imagination, evoking feelings of mystery, romance, and tranquility. This fascination with the soft light of the moon has inspired poets, artists, and dreamers alike, giving rise to countless tales and legends. It is no wonder then, that the name "Moonlight White Tea" conjures images of beauty, elegance, and serenity.

The tea leaf pickers, who are predominantly young and attractive women, further enhance the enchanting aura surrounding this tea. Their delicate and precise work is reminiscent of the graceful movements one might associate with a moonlit night. This connection between the tea pickers and the moonlight has led to the moniker "Moonlight Beauty", highlighting the ethereal qualities of both the tea and those who gather it.

In some regions, such as Yunnan, manufacturers have adopted the traditional method as a drying agent for the tea leaves. This process not only adds to the mystique of Moonlight White Tea but also ensures a unique and delicate flavor profile. However, modern techniques, such as using machine for drying, have also been employed, showcasing the versatility and adaptability of tea production.

While Fujian white tea is commonly associated with this type of tea, Yunnan white tea is also produced in the Yunnan province. Despite both regions using similar processing methods, the main difference lies in the variety of tea leaves used.

Yunnan white tea is made from the Camellia sinensis var. assamica, which is exclusive to Yunnan.
